The Tahfidh Quran (Holy Quran memorization) School
"Alif Laam Raa. A book which we have revealed to you (Muhammad) so that
you may lead the people from out of the darknesses into the light by their
Lord's leave to the path of the All-Mighty, the Praiseworthy." (Surah Ibrahim:1)
The Society
(JTQ) was initially formed to
fill a gap at the Kenyan Coast,
that of a lack of Quran memorization
Classes. From humble beginnings
with the accomodation of some
25 orphan children, all victims
of the then ongoing shifta war,
who were enrolled in the first
ever class of its kind in East
Africa. The initial accomodation
was at the Sunni Muslim Cemetary
near the Railway Station. Soon,
a benefactor availed a piece
of land in Likoni, just across
the famous Likoni Ferry. The
first classroom at the Likoni
plot was a simple thatched roof
structure. With the generous
support from various well-wishers,
a magnificient complex sprung
up at Likoni, now known as the
Darul Ulum Complex. Eventually,
the Tahfidh class was rellocated
to Malindi (now run by the Tawfiq
muslim Youth). However, another
Tahfidh class was then reintroduced
at the Likoni complex and this
time located at the Hostel facility
just a kilometre away from the
main Darul Ulum Complex. Situated
in a panoramic and serene environment,
the Mosque there offers suitable
accomodation for the Tahfidh
class. The children are hosted
in one of the dormitories in
the complex (which is the Boarding
facility for the Secondary School)
The Tahfidh
class is FREE of charge
to the student apart from a
nominal admission fee of KShs
500/=. The annual cost per child
to the society is KES some
12,000/= (USD165 or Euro 140)
and this is essentially the
cost of the boarding plus the
tutor. The classes are conducted
by two Qaris, one is a former
student. Currently the class
is made up of thirty students
with an average of six completing
their Quran memorisation each
year. Each class runs for two
years with annual external examiners
testing the progress of the
students.
The students
have various opportunities to
attend competitions organised
in and around Kenya and in the
past have also been invited
to attend the famed Quran Competition
in the Holy city of Makkah.
The students have performed
quite well and those who have
completed the memorization program
have gone on to other higher
institutions of learning.
This class runs
entirely on your moral and financial
contribution. Most of the students
are from poor families and or
orphans. Please consider
sponsoring a child to the Tahfidh
class. Should we be able
to increase the collection,
we can even afford to pay the
tutors better.
Hadrat Uthman (Radhi Allaho anho) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallaho alaihe
wasallam) said: "The best amongst you is he who learns the Qur'an and teaches
it."
The succesful one, inevitably, is the one who takes advantage of the best years
of memorisation and these are from the age of five to twenty-three
approximately. A person's ability to memorise during these years is very good.
In fact these are the golden years of memorising. Therefore, it is necessary for
a person to keep himself occupied during the these years of his life, memorising
the Book of Allah as much as he can.
Commiting things to memory at this age can be done very quickly and
forgestronging is not so easy. This is in opposition to what happens after this
time when a person memorises with difficulty and forgets with great speed. He
spoke the truth who said:
Memorising in youth is like engraving on stone And memorising when old is
like engraving on water
Thus, it is necessary for all of us to take advantage of the golden years of
memorising. If we cannot then we should encourage our sons and daughters to do
so. Let us help these young children who wish to memorize the Holy Quran by
contributing to this Quran Memorization
Class.
The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: "Whoever
guides to something good is like the one who does it." [Saheeh Muslim]
and: "Whoever invites to guidance will receive the reward
like the rewards of those who follow him and that will not diminish anything
from their rewards…" [Saheeh Muslim]
And with Allah is success and prayers and peace be upon our Messenger
Muhammad, upon his family and all his Companions.
